As 2017 comes to a close, it is a good time to reflect on the interesting trends in yoga that we saw this past year.
In Germany, two yoga instructors decided Beer Yoga (Bier Yoga) would be a good idea and its popularity spread to Australia. Yes, that’s right…Beer Yoga! Yoga positions which involve holding a bottle of beer and drinking beer…Relaxing or “an all-time low” as one yoga instructor put it. Does this go against the idea of wellness that yoga prides itself on?
Celebrating body positivity is another yoga story that made the news. Yoga is for all body types. A university student taking a break from her studies started a yoga practice and began the “Big Gal Yoga” movement that has become popular, a platform that advocates for body positivity and representation in yoga.
Other interesting yoga trends involve yoga and animals. Cat yoga, dog yoga and even goat yoga. The goal of dog yoga is to further strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Goat yoga would take place outside for obvious reasons and seemed to take off in the United States. Other trends include antigravity yoga which involves the use of a special type of hammock for stretching your spine and boxing yoga, where boxing and yoga positions are combined.
Cat yoga is interesting as many yoga poses are similar to cat poses.
What trends will emerge in 2018?
